What is AGENTS.md?
AGENTS.md is a plain Markdown file at the root of your repo that gives coding agents the context a README gives humans: how to install, run and test the project, the conventions to follow and what to leave alone. Codex reads it, and so do a growing number of other agents, which makes it a good single home for your agent instructions.
It’s just Markdown with no required fields. Use headings that make sense for your project; the generator uses the common ones: setup commands, testing instructions, code style, project structure and boundaries.
AGENTS.md vs CLAUDE.md
They do the same job for different tools: AGENTS.md for Codex, Cursor and others, CLAUDE.md for Claude Code. If your team uses both, keep the instructions in AGENTS.md and make CLAUDE.md a single line, @AGENTS.md, which Claude Code expands into the full file. Our CLAUDE.md generator uses the same questions if you’d rather keep them separate.

Questions.
Where does AGENTS.md go?
At the root of your repository. In a monorepo you can add more AGENTS.md files inside subfolders; Codex combines them from the root down, and the closer file wins where they disagree. Codex also reads a personal one in ~/.codex/AGENTS.md.
Which agents read AGENTS.md?
Codex and Cursor read it. Recent versions of Claude Code read it too when a project has no CLAUDE.md; otherwise add @AGENTS.md to your CLAUDE.md.
What should I put in AGENTS.md?
The exact commands to install, run and test, your code conventions, the folders that matter, what agents must not touch, and how to verify a change before calling it done.
