How Claude Code pricing works
Claude Code runs on Claude models. If you use it with an API key, you pay per token: input tokens (everything the agent reads, including your files and its own earlier turns) and output tokens (what it writes). Output costs several times more than input, and cached input costs a fraction of normal input, which is why long sessions are cheaper than they first look.
If you use it with a Claude subscription (Pro or Max), you pay a flat monthly price and get usage limits instead of a bill per token. This calculator shows what your usage would cost at API prices, so you can see which way is cheaper for you.
Claude Code usage limits and resets
On Pro and Max, Claude Code shares your plan’s limits with Claude on the web and desktop. There’s a session limit that resets every five hours and a weekly limit that resets once a week. Run /usage in Claude Code to see how much you’ve used and exactly when each limit resets.

How much does Claude Code cost per month?
With a subscription, it’s the plan’s flat monthly price, with usage limits. With an API key, it depends on how many tokens you use: the calculator shows typical light, moderate and heavy days, or enter your own numbers from /cost.
