Why AI agents need a PRD

Ask an agent to “build a bill-splitting app” and it will happily invent features, screens and a data model you didn’t want. A short PRD fixes the target: who it’s for, the few features that matter, what’s explicitly out, and how you’ll know it works.

The generated PRD gives every feature acceptance criteria and splits the build into milestones you can test by hand. Save it as PRD.md in your repo, then start with the kickoff prompt, which asks the agent to plan first and build milestone 1 only.

Questions.

What is a PRD?

A product requirements document: a short description of what you’re building, for whom, which features it needs and what “done” looks like. For AI coding, it’s the spec the agent builds against.

How do I use the PRD with Claude Code, Codex or Cursor?

Save it as PRD.md in your project, then paste the kickoff prompt. The agent reads the PRD, proposes a plan, and builds one milestone at a time.

How long should a PRD for an AI agent be?

One or two pages. Enough to remove guesswork about scope; not so long that the agent loses the important parts.
